If you’re making a Star Trek video game, you can’t choose a main villain much more iconic for series fans than the lizard-like Gorn. But then of course you actually have to make a video game featuring The Gorn, and with Namco Bandai and Paramount’s new Star Trek game being based on J.J. Abrams’ recent reboot of the series it may be a bit challenging to keep the same grounded, serious tone of the film when your villain is best known for throwing Styrofoam boulders in a rubber lizard costume.

Watching the video above, it’s easy to see how one may be confused about the villain’s inclusion, but the development is being helmed by Digital Extremes, who have had success in the past working on the recent Darkness II, Bioshock II, and the criminally underrated Dark Sector. The entire game is built for co-op, where “Kirk and Spock’s complementary personalities result in the most fully realized and varied co-op experience for this console generation,” according to the game’s press release. It’ll be nice to see Spock actually pull his weight this time, since Kirk was the only character who got to fight The Gorn in the classic 1967 episode “Arena.”

Fingers crossed to see this exact scene recreated with Chris Pine

Though I’d love to see a game whose entire storyline is comprised of fighting one single enemy, it’s probably for the best that Digital Extremes has included more of the Gorn race than just the captain from the Original Series episode (though I’d love to see a similar sequence where the two captains are pitted against each other in unarmed combat). There are quite a few types of Gorn for players to fight apparently, as the press release states:

The Gorn range in size and abilities, infecting their foes with venom that can poison, cause hallucinations, and even kill. From the smaller infantry Gorn Rushers, to the larger Gorn Warriors and the massive Gorn Brutes, the Gorn provides a serious direct threat, while the wall-climbing Gorn females showcase the cunning for which this race is feared. Technologically capable and possessing the antithesis of Federation ideals, the Gorn pose a devastating threat to Starfleet, the Enterprise, and its crew.

My enjoyment of this game will however, be 90% dependent on whether the camera whip-zooms to Captain Kirk when he first encounters the monster. I simply will not stand for anything less. You can decide for yourself whether the Gorn in the game looks enough like a man in a rubber suit early next year.
