Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990) MicroReview

Second in the Metal Gear series really ups the ante, resulting in a much more difficult, yet tighter and better-paced experience. Stealth is hugely elaborated on, giving guards entire multi-screen areas to patrol and making them more sensitive to noise- a mechanic used to humorous effect in many places. Much beefier story actually tackles some surprisingly tough issues, and ties heavily into later Metal Gear Solid entries. The puzzles here are complex enough to be fun, without being frustratingly obscure like in the previous title- this, combined with the tighter narrative, makes for a very well-paced game overall. Not to be confused with ‘Snake’s Revenge,’ Konami’s separate Metal Gear sequel, which had nothing to do with series creator Hideo Kojima and isn’t considered canon.
